Panel of experts to look at hub airport proposals

London mayor Boris Johnson has revealed the panel of experts responsible for looking at plans to develop a new hub airport in the south-east.

Among those taking a lead role are the design, engineering and project management consultancy, Atkins, which has previously worked on the London 2012 Olympics and the Dubai Metro system.

David Tonkin, Atkins’ UK chief executive officer, said: “We have been working internationally with airport owners, airlines, governments, lenders and construction companies for more than 50 years to create world-class airports. We are confident the experience and expertise we have will help the mayor shape a clearer vision for the future of aviation in the south-east."

Atkins will mainly work with Hadid Architects and Pascall & Watson, which worked on projects such as Heathrow's Terminal 5 and St Pancras station, on some elements of the Airport Design and Infrastructure package.

The shortlist was revealed ahead of the mayor's trip to give oral evidence to an aviation inquiry convened by the Parliamentary Transport Select Committee.

The mayor is expected to be asked why the development of a new airport hub is so important to London, and why expanding existing airports such as Heathrow is no longer, in his opinion, a viable option for growth in the aviation industry.
