Deloitte has started to experience a positive impact from its efforts to improve workforce diversity and strengthen the UK's record on social mobility.

Announcing its financial results for the year ending May 31st 2017, the firm revealed that it recruited more than 3,500 people in the last financial year, including more than 1,600 school leavers, interns and graduates.

Use of contextualised academic data has enabled Deloitte to take on more than 100 people who previously wouldn't have passed its selection criteria. As a result, the company was ranked fifth in the UK's first Social Mobility Employer Index.

Its workforce now comprises nearly 6,000 people across 22 offices, with potential for further employment growth as a result of job creation programmes in Belfast, Cardiff and Newcastle.

Internally, Deloitte promoted more than 5,000 people in the past year. It promoted 57 new partners in the UK alone and recruited 30 more.

Nearly a fifth (19 per cent) of partners are women, up from 14 per cent in 2014, and the firm has set a target that 25 per cent of partners will be women by 2020.

David Sproul, senior partner and chief executive of Deloitte, said developing a diverse talent pool that reflects "the make-up of today's society" is one of the organisation's top priorities.

He added: "We will continue to work hard to show that everyone can thrive, develop and succeed in our firm. We also recognise the difference we can make by improving access to education and training across society more broadly."

The annual results also showed that Deloitte's revenue increased by 11.2 per cent during the year to May 31st 2017, climbing to £3.4 billion. In the UK, double-digit growth was recorded in the firm's audit business and risk advisory and consulting division.
