IBM acquires Berlin-based digital agency

IBM is going ahead with a transaction to acquire Aperto, a digital agency with headquarters in Berlin.

The American technology and consulting company completed its first digital marketing agency acquisition in Europe to secure design talent and "high-value services expertise" in strategy, analytics and cognitive computing.

It said one of the main aims of the move is to meet a growing client need for digital transformation.

Aperto will join the IBM Interactive Experience team, whose consultants deliver solutions for high-profile clients including Nationwide, Jaguar Land Rover, Citi and Wimbledon.

The European agency has a workforce of over 300 employees who will continue to serve the firm's existing roster of clients, which includes Airbus, Volkswagen and Siemens.

Paul Papas, global leader of IBM Interactive Experience, said the acquisition will help the firm strengthen its position as a "global market leader" in experience design, which is increasingly being recognised as a core element of business strategy.

He added: "We're honoured to be joining forces with Aperto and look forward to reshaping the future of business and digital innovation with our clients in Germany and beyond."

Dirk Buddensiek, chief executive of Aperto, said: "We pride ourselves on remaining at the forefront of the digital revolution. After 20 years in the industry, we're proud to join forces with IBM iX, the largest global digital agency, to continue doing just that."

This is IBM's second acquisition in a matter of days as it seeks to strengthen the digital, strategy and design skills within its corporation.

Last week, the company announced its intention to purchase Resource/Ammirati, a US marketing agency whose clients include Adobe, Nike, Microsoft and Coca-Cola.
