Microsoft purchases patents from AOL

by Jamie Anderson

Microsoft has announced that it plans to purchase AOL's entire patent portfolio for $1.1 billion (£694 million).

The computing giant's decision to buy these assets will see the company acquire some  core patents and puts it on a better footing than its competitors Apple and Google.

AOL's patents, believed to be around 800 in total, include key internet functions such as email and messaging as well as mobile technology that holds great significance now that many companies have put concerted efforts into tablets.

Ron Laurie, a patents expert in Silicon Valley, told the Financial Times: "It sounds like the cold war arms race. Microsoft is looking at Google sitting on a pile of basic infrastructure patents and wanted to respond."

The move comes after Facebook announced that it had purchased the photo sharing application Instagram for $1 billion, which has 30 million registered users across the globe.
