Windows phone app store to close

by Zaneta Motkowicz

Microsoft has announced it plans to close its app store for the Windows Mobile phone as it plans to phase out the model.

With Apple dominating the smartphone world with its range of iPhone's, iPad's and Mac devices, the company recently crossed the 25 billion mark for downloads from its app store and Microsoft wants to up its capability.

From May 9th, customers will no longer be able to use the online shop for the Windows phone but the move will not affect any users that have the new OS device.

Microsoft has reassured customers that applications bought prior to the cut-off point will still work once the decision comes into force.

The company said that other firms "might continue to offer their apps through other markets or their own websites".

It comes as a milestone for Microsoft, which saw the share of the market place decline by 37 per cent for the Windows phone and prompted officials to make the decision.
