Our client is responsible for the UK’s Aerospace technology strategy and overseeing the development of a £3.9 billion R&T investment through to 2026 aimed at maintaining and growing the UK’s competitive position globally.

 

The value of this industry to the UK economy cannot be overstated. The UK is Europe’s number one aerospace manufacturer, second globally only to the United States. The industry has a significant effect on the national economy through profits and job creation, both directly and indirectly. It is a growth industry; between now and 2030 there will be an estimated global demand for approximately 27,000 new passenger aircraft worth potentially up to $3.7 trillion. The aerospace sector is vital to the UK.

The UK is a frontrunner in aircraft manufacturing and technology relying heavily on the investment and work that advanced technologies in the 1970s and 1980s. Smart, efficient and focused investments now will continue to generate long term benefits for UK plc

Reporting to the Chief Strategy Analyst, the role is to:  

1) Development of the Strategy Team tool kit

 

Context: The strategy team has developed several tools with which to evaluate future opportunities and its impact.  This includes a market model, supply chain database and macro economic model.  These tools have been developed by the Strategy Manager and Economist working in conjunction with consultants.  They will continue to form an important basis of their work and benefit from continued development and refresh. This aspect of the role requires the candidate to: 

  • Support the Strategy Manager in the continued development and evolution of the market model and supply chain database

  • Research and obtain relevant and reliable data to enable the market model, economic model and supply chain database development

  • Lead the development of new analysis and modelling to support the business as required

     

    2) Strategic assessment

     

Context:  Their mission is focused on maximising economic impact.  Achieving this mission requires them to consider a broad range of opportunities and challenges, and potential intervening measures that could be taken by the Institute, Industry or Government. This aspect of the role requires the candidate to: 
  • On a case by case basis, support strategic assessments of opportunities or challenges relevant to their remit

  • Gather data and utilise appropriate frameworks to undertake strategic analysis

  • Reporting and presenting findings from strategic assessments to deliver persuasive arguments to internal and external stakeholders

  • Potentially publish papers or give public presentations on work

     

    3) Strategy

  • Supporting the development and future updates of the strategy, working closely with other members of the strategy team to develop the approach and relevant content

  • Supporting the development of publications (including official papers and regular news letters) to update the sector on the strategy and portfolio.

 

 

4) Internal/external projects and supporting activities

 

Context: They are a small, lean and young organisation.  Staff are expected to support the continued development by contributing to internal organisational and cultural development projects.  The broad reach and remit also requires staff to occasionally take responsibilities outside their core objectives. 

 

 

The Candidate

 The candidate will need strong analytical skills, normally working with excel to perform quantitative analysis.  The candidate will need to be a structured thinker and problem solver, able to develop suitable frameworks and approaches to undertaking analysis.  They should be able to demonstrate experience of working from first principles to solve an analytical problem, ensuring data and analysis is pertinent to the task (for example, a hypothesis driven approach).

 

The candidate will have some familiarity with engineering industries, preferably aerospace, but a detailed knowledge is not necessarily required.

 

Background and Experience

  • Evidence of strong analytical skills, and examples of modelling or analysis to impact decisions

  • Evidence of building strong relationships and working with others on projects with shared responsibility

  • Problem solving experience, able to develop new approaches to analysing ambiguous issues and opportunities of a business nature

  • Researching and sourcing data, including ensuring data integrity and trust

  • Strong IT skills (particularly Excel for business modelling / analysis)

     

    Education

  • Higher education qualifications in Business, Economics or Engineering (where analytics is a core part of the curriculum)

 

Characteristics and personality

  • Self-starter with great energy and drive to deliver

  • Strong communicator who comes across with conviction and credibility and is able to engage at various levels in the company, working as close partner with senior management

  • Natural collaborator with strong work ethic and team spirit with the ability to take the leadership, strategic and implementation aspects of the role in his/her stride

  • Comfortable working in ambiguous situations, energetic and flexible to pick up and lead work in areas on the periphery of their core responsibilities to “get the job done”
