Consultants 'need to be more personal'

Consultants should try and add a more personal touch to their work.

This is according to Richard Hall, director and founder of HBR Business Consultants, who has discussed the issue with Consultant-News.

"I would like to make their job more personal with less attention away from making the 'fast buck'," he stated.

Mr Hall explained that when his organisation takes on new clients, they stress the fact that they do not simply offer a quick fix solution and are "in for the long haul".

"You have to make it more personal by putting yourself in their shoes. From an executive point of view, some of our clients have invested substantial personal wealth into their businesses, so to them it is very personal," the expert stated.

He stressed the importance of consultants establishing a bond with the people at organisations they work with, as this can yield "priceless" information that might be missed otherwise.

When comes to the consultancy services companies require most, Mr Hall said IT-based solutions are increasingly common and can range from developing a new website to a full range of social media services.

He said clients' problems often involve not having enough time to implement elements of their strategy or to carry out one-off projects.

The expert also said the economic difficulties of recent years has lead to many businesses being too focused on the short-term, when they should really be planning at least five years ahead.

Last month, research from Regus revealed consultants are increasingly becoming 'jacks of all trades' working for a number of clients in a range of roles at the same time.
