Capgemini has launched Digital Manufacturing Services, a group-wide offering designed to aid industrial organisations as they seek to meet the demands and challenges of the digital age.

The new initiative is set to help manufacturing clients gain advantages such as reduced turnaround times and productivity gains, through new business models and the development of smart, connected plants and products.

It will focus on issues such as product and asset lifecycle management, industrial cybersecurity, big data and complex system simulation.

Services will be delivered from a centre in Mumbai and three hubs in North America, France and Germany, to companies in industries including aerospace, defence, automotive, chemicals, consumer products, energy and utilities.

Introducing the new offering, Capgemini underlined the wider importance of digital transformation in manufacturing, stressing that it demands new skills, working methods and ways of thinking.

Jean-Pierre Petit, global head of digital manufacturing for the group, said many businesses fall into the trap of viewing digital in regards to either the factory floor or the customer, rather than both.

"Only by looking at digitising and connecting both the customer and smart operations can manufacturers truly realise the optimisation and disruptive capabilities of digital to drive growth," he added.

"Capgemini's capacity to connect the physical and virtual worlds is unique in the market."

Mr Petit said the consulting firm had helped manufacturing clients across the world with its capacity to "connect physical assets to business systems while also leveraging customer insights as an integral part of digital transformation initiatives".

One company that has benefited from Capgemini's services is Faurecia, a French automotive parts manufacturer that is pursuing an organisation-wide digital transformation initiative, focusing on areas like supply chain, collaborative working and customer relationship management.
