IBM begins process supercomputing cluster

by Zaneta Motkowicz

IBM has announced that it has signed a five-year deal with the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON) to create the world's biggest super computer.

The exascale cluster is part of a €33 million (£27.2 million) agreement with the Dutch organisation designed to look through data collected by the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) which can be traced back to the origin of the universe.

It is not expected to go online until 2024 but until then IBM will work on the supercomputing exscale which is predicted to be able to handle twice as much data that the internet currently holds on a daily basis.

Ton Engbersen, of IBM Research in Zurich, said: "If you take the current global daily Internet traffic and multiply it by two, you are in the range of the data set that the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope will be collecting every day."

IBM was recently named as the provider of cloud computing in Australia, and this latest move will push the company as a world leader of innovation.
