PwC 'delighted' after topping social mobility...

PwC has said it is "delighted" after being ranked first in the Social Mobility Employer Index 2019.

Created by the Social Mobility Foundation, the index rates employers across Britain on the actions they are taking to boost inclusivity - specifically how they are accessing and developing talent from all class backgrounds.

Various factors are taken into account to compile the list, such as how people from lower-income backgrounds progress within specific organisations, business recruitment and selection processes, and the work companies do with young people and apprentices.

Of the 125 employers from 18 sectors considered for the ranking, PwC came top for the efforts it has made to support those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

Key measures introduced by the firm include:

  • Operating employment and schools outreach in Bradford, which has been identified by the government as a social mobility opportunity area
  • Engaging with schools and universities across the country
  • Increasing the range of routes by which people from all backgrounds can gain employment with PwC

Kevin Ellis, chairman and senior partner at PwC UK, said the company's status as a large employer means it has the opportunity to facilitate positive change for the people and communities it works with across the country.

"Good progress has been made but there is still much more to be done," he added.

"Many businesses are doing fantastic work on social mobility, and we will continue to collaborate with others to have the biggest impact and ensure that someone's future is determined by their talent and determination, not by their background."

David Johnston OBE, chief executive of the Social Mobility Foundation, welcomed the fact that an increasing number of employers are participating in the Social Mobility Employer Index every year.

This growth in interest led to the size of this year's ranking of leading organisations increasing from 50 to 75.
