PwC: No plans to downsize UK office space

The UK has witnessed a monumental shift in attitudes to working from home in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, but PwC believes there will still be a need for major enterprises to occupy office space when the world returns to normal.

Kevin Ellis, PwC UK chairman and senior partner, believes that while many businesses will continue to offer home working to their staff in the future, there remains a strong appetite to maintain office spaces.

Mr Ellis commented: "The future of the market for office space is difficult to predict, if anything at the moment we need more space than ever because of social distancing.

"From the messages I get from our people, I know that many really value having the option to use an office, whether for a personal or business need."

The UK has seen government guidance for all staff who can work from home to do so in recent months - a decision that has sped up many firms' own ambitions to provide more flexible working arrangements for workers.

However, for many, a mixture of home and office working is seen as the ideal solution. It provides individuals the flexibility to enjoy a better work-life balance, while ensuring businesses continue to function cohesively by bringing together key staff when needed.

Indeed, it is a premise that PwC itself subscribes to, with the business confirming it will continue to hold extensive office space in key metropolitan areas of London Bridge and Embankment, as well as having no plans to downsize regional offices up and down the UK for its more than 22,000 members of staff.

"Hybrid working is here to stay, and therefore the office will remain a key part of working life," Mr Ellis concluded.
